    Hike with a Naturalist: Ypsilon Lake

Location:      This hike will meet at the Lawn Lake Trailhead located inside Rocky Mountain National Park down Old Fall River Road.  From the Fall River Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park drive through the Park to the first road on your right with signs for the Old Fall River Road, Alluvial Fan, and Lawn Lake Trailhead.  The trailhead is the first parking area on the right down Old Fall River Road.  Meet your instructor by the restrooms.

 

Time:               8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

                       

Course Description: 

Participants will travel through dense pine forests and wildflower meadows along the Roaring River on this all day hike.  Breathtaking views of the Mummy range and ample opportunities to view wildlife can be found in this abundant, life filled corridor.  Participants will pass Chipmunk Lake on the way to Ypsilon Lake which is known for excellent Cutthroat fishing.   

                                                                                                   

Course Level:  IV                              

Moderate hike of more than five miles per day with more than 1,000 ft. of elevation gain  

Roundtrip mileage:  8.75 miles

Elevation gain: 2,092 ft.

Maximum elevation reached: 10, 632 ft.

 

Brief Instructor Biography (additional information available at www.rmna.org): 

Jeff worked as a park naturalist for the National Park Service from 1977 to 2009. His special area of interest is birds. He is a Pennsylvania native and has a degree in outdoor education and natural science from Pennsylvania State University. Jeff has worked at Mammoth Cave National Park, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Edison National Historic Site, Gateway National Park, Redwood National Park and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. He came to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1990.

 

Expectations:  Professional conduct will be expected from participants at all times.  Individual ideas will be respected.  Except during course breaks, cellular phones, pagers, and personal entertainment devices are strictly prohibited in the classroom and during field sessions.

 

Tentative Course Schedule:

 8:00 AM          Meet at the Lawn Lake Trailhead.

12:30 PM          Lunch

  4:30 PM          Arrive back at trailhead.

 

What to Bring:

      ·         Sack lunch, snacks, energy bars,  Water                                

      ·         Binocular                                    

      ·         Wear comfortable, layered clothing

      ·     Small notebook; pen or pencil

·         Camera (optional)

      ·         Whistle


  Remember to Bring the 10 Essentials:

Rocky Mountain National Park recommends that hikers always carry the 10 essentials in their daypacks.

     Raingear                                     Map and compass                       Flashlight or headlamp

     Sunglasses and sunscreen            Candles                                      Matches or other fire starter

     Pocketknife                                 First-aid kit                                 Extra layers of clothing

     Sack lunch, snacks, and water                                                     

 

Note:  Rocky Mountain Field Seminars recommends that participants for all courses dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots/shoes.  Participants should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions.
