Rocky Mountain Field Seminars      

 

  Hike with a Naturalist:  Twin Sisters

Location:   Located on Hwy. 7 across from Lily Lake next to the turnoff for the Baldpate Inn and former Lily Lake Visitor Center.  Please meet in the parking lot across Hwy. 7 from Lily Lake.

 

Time:                7:30 AM - 4:30 PM

                       

Course Description:  On this mountain summit hike, participants will have the opportunity to travel through rich subalpine forest as they gaze down upon Estes Park and the surrounding plains communities.  Folks will learn about mountain ecology with chances to view wildlife such as pine squirrels, martens, and grouse.  Breathtaking views await those who summit and rocky outcroppings offer folks a chance to sit and ponder the vastness of the land below.

 

Course Level:  IV

Moderate hikes of more than five miles per day with elevation gain of more than 1,000 ft.

Mileage: 7.2

Elevation gain: 2,388 ft.

Maximum elevation reached: 11,428 ft.

 

Brief Instructor Biography (additional information available at www.rmna.org): Jeff Maugans worked as a park naturalist for the National Park Service from 1977 to 2009. His special area of interest is birds. He is a Pennsylvania native and has a degree in outdoor education and natural science from Pennsylvania State University. Jeff has worked at Mammoth Cave National Park, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Edison National Historic Site, Gateway National Park, Redwood National Park and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. He came to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1990.

 

Expectations:  Professional conduct will be expected from participants at all times.  Individual ideas will be respected.  Except during course breaks, cellular phones, pagers, and personal entertainment devices are strictly prohibited in the classroom and during field sessions.

 

Tentative Course Schedule:

7:30 AM           Meet at parking lot (across highway from Lily Lake).

Noon                Lunch

4:30 PM            Arrive back at vehicles.

 

What to Bring:


·         Sack lunch, snacks, energy bars, & Water                             

·         Binocular                                    

·         Wear comfortable, layered clothing

·         Small notebook; pen or pencil

·         Camera (optional)

·         Whistle

 

Remember to Bring the 10 Essentials:

Rocky Mountain National Park recommends that hikers always carry the 10 essentials in their daypacks.

     Raingear                                     Map and compass                       Flashlight or headlamp

     Sunglasses and sunscreen            Candles                                      Matches or other fire starter

     Pocketknife                                 First-aid kit                                 Extra layers of clothing

     Sack lunch, snacks, and water                                                     

 

Note:  Rocky Mountain Field Seminars recommends that participants for all courses dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots/shoes.  Participants should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions.
