What’s Hiding Underwater?

Location:      Meeting spot is at the Moraine Park Visitor Center located off Bear Lake Road across from the Moraine Park Campground/Fern and Cub Lake Road turnoff.  Please drop children off by the front doors of the visitor center.

 

Time:              9:00 AMNoon

                       

Course Description:

Streams and ponds have an abundance of creatures living just below the surface and around the shoreline.  Kids will get to explore the stream and learn about some of the macro-invertebrates found in the shallow waters of the Big Thompson River by using dip nets and hand lenses. Evidence of larger animals will also be discussed as the group moves along the river bank. The role that these different organisms play in the food web will be discussed.

 

Course Level:  II

Short-distance walks throughout the day on primarily level terrain

 

Tentative Course Schedule:

  9:00 AM    Meet and greet.

  9:15 AM    Short walk to the Big Thompson River for overview of class; begin water exploration. 

10:30 AM   Snack

10:45 AM   Continued water exploration

12:00 PM   Parents pick up children at the Moraine Park Visitor Center.

 

Note:  Rocky Mountain Field Seminars recommends that participants for all courses dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots/shoes.  Participants should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions.

  • Water to drink
  • Raingear
  • Good shoes for walking
