Grand Lake & Kawuneeche Valley History

Location:      Grand Arts Center, 913 Park Ave., Grand Lake, Colorado

 

Time:   Monday          9:00 Am-5:00 PM

            Tuesday          8:00 AM-12:30 PM               

 

Course Description:   This course will provide an overview of the region's past by mixing brief lecture-and-discussion format with visits to historical sites of significance.  Site visits will range from an ancient Indian battlefield to early homesteads, from stately resorts to deserted cabins. Participants will examine numerous historical sites in the Grand Lake area to discover the outlines of settlement and change.  This seminar is intended to be more than just an historical tour.  The cost of lunch on the first day of this course has been included in the seminar fee.

Short-distance walks throughout the day on primarily level terrain

 

Brief Instructor Biography (additional information available at www.rmna.org):

Dave Lively is the founder and President of Historic Fraser,  vice-chairman of the Grand County Historic Preservation Board, and past-president and current board member of the Grand Lake Area Historical Society.  As a volunteer, he has presented the Sisters of Courage interpretive program for Rocky Mountain National Park for eight years. He is related to a family who homesteaded in the Kawuneeche Valley in 1896.

 

Expectations:  Professional conduct will be expected from participants at all times.  Individual ideas will be respected.  Except during course breaks, cellular phones, pagers, and personal entertainment devices are strictly prohibited in the classroom and during field sessions.

 

Tentative Course Schedule:

 Monday, June 17

  9:00 AM         Introductions and departure from Grand Arts Center

10:00 AM         Site visit: Native American

·         Early encampment

·         Battle site

·         Site visit: Grand Lake City

·         Site visits: Homesteads, townsite

·         Site visit: Water diversion project

12:00 PM          Luncheon provided by RMNA

1:00 PM            Site visit: RMNP Kawuneeche Visitor Center

Ø  Harbison homestead presentation

Ø  Discussions and additional site visits as time permits

  5:00 PM          Return to the Grand Arts Center.

  

Tuesday, June 18

  8:00 AM         Introductions and departure from Grand Arts Center

  8:30 AM         Site visit: RMNP

v  Walk to gold mining townsite.

v  Water diversion project

v  Walk to historic CCC housing site.

v  Discussion and additional site visits as time allows

  12:30 PM        Return to the Grand Arts Center.

  Snacks, energy bars, and Water                                            

 

Remember to Bring the 10 Essentials:

Rocky Mountain National Park recommends that hikers always carry the 10 essentials in their daypacks.

     Pocketknife                                 First-aid kit                                 Extra layers of clothing

     Sack lunch, snacks, and water                                                     

 

Note:  Rocky Mountain Field Seminars recommends that participants for all courses dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots/shoes.  Participants should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions.

Teacher Recertification Credit: 

Most seminars are eligible for teacher recertification credit through the Centennial Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES).  The fee is $25.00 per seminar (.5 unit) or $25.00 per series of threaded seminars (1.0 - 3.0 units).   A list of threaded seminars can be found online at www.rmna.org.  Participants must enroll in all seminars of a threaded series in order to qualify for the $25.00 multi-unit fee. Please be prepared to pay for this credit with a check, made payable to BOCES, on the first day of a seminar or on the final day of a threaded series of seminars.
